| If you would have asked me last year if I would vote yes on the Heartbeat Bill, I would have said yes. To be honest it would have been hard, but I would have. Since then I have changed my mind. I had the opportunity to speak with some family members who are and were in the medical field here in Iowa for decades, several women from my district and other medical professionals. They informed me that it is not possible to create an abortion bill that is good. I have a relative who worked in Sioux City for several years. She informed me that they often could not talk a mother out of having an abortion, most of the women that came in that wanted an abortion had already made their mind up. The gut wrenching stories of the women who performed a home or back aisle abortion were the ones that really got to me. Imagine having to tell a woman who performed a home abortion on herself that it would not be possible for her to have children in the future because she damaged her reproductive system by performing a home abortion. Imagine an 18 year old female who came into your ER because she thought it was a good idea to drink a gallon drain cleaner to abort her unborn child. In this case, the mother burned her esophagus and she damaged her brain for the rest of her life. We now have to ask ourselves if this is going to put a strain on our Iowa Healthcare System due to the increased risk of infection and sepsis due to the simple fact that there will be significantly more people interested in doing these "back alley abortions". Furthermore, is this going to be an issue that spreads BBPs (Blood Borne Pathogens)? Are there going to be increased risks of HIV and/or Hepatitis? We just do not know yet, but I am sure that in a few years we will be able to review the data to see if we did the ethical thing or not. | |||

| I believe that we have become to soft on most crimes. That being said we to start treating certain crimes as additions and not crimes. I do not support the use of marijuana for everyone, but I do know people who used it for medical reasons. I personal look as marijuana as a drug just like alcohol and tobacco. We should be treating marijuana as that type of a drug and not throwing people in jail for using it. The issue state are having with marijuana is that financial institutions are not allowed to give them a banking account do to federal regulations. | |||

I will be running a bill that requires all miscarriages in Iowa to be legal recorded as "Medical Miscarriage -Abortions".
